Review: The Beast (BDB #14) by J.R. Ward

Rhage and Mary return in a new novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, a series “so popular, I don’t think there’s a reader today who hasn’t at least heard of [it]” (USA Today).
Nothing is as it used to be for the Black Dagger Brotherhood. After avoiding war with the Shadows, alliances have shifted and lines have been drawn. The slayers of the Lessening Society are stronger than ever, preying on human weakness to acquire more money, more weapons, more power. But as the Brotherhood readies for an all-out attack on them, one of their own fights a battle within himself…
For Rhage, the Brother with the biggest appetites, but also the biggest heart, life was supposed to be perfect—or at the very least, perfectly enjoyable. Mary, his beloved shellan, is by his side and his King and his brothers are thriving. But Rhage can’t understand—or control—the panic and insecurity that plague him…
And that terrifies him—as well as distances him from his mate. After suffering mortal injury in battle, Rhage must reassess his priorities—and the answer, when it comes to him, rocks his world…and Mary’s. But Mary is on a journey of her own, one that will either bring them closer together or cause a split that neither will recover from…

5 Beast stars!

Rhage is my all-time favorite Brother with Vicious, Z and John Matthew all following up a close second (I know, but I can’t choose). To this day, Lover Eternal is still my most beloved romance in the series and I thank the powers-that-be for sending me a review copy of The Beast. I was excited/nervous where this book would take us because Rhage and Mary went thru hell and back to be together but at the conclusion of this book, I realized they needed this to happen in their relationship (not going to tell you what) and by God we needed to be apart of it too!

Like so may, I adore this series but I have to admit that I have not been “in love” with the last few installments. Yes, they were great reads all worth a 4-5 star rating, I mean come on, it’s J.R. Ward and she is probably the BEST PR writer in the game currently but, the recent one’s have not captured my heart like the first 7. However, I am here to say that The Beast was absolutely, positively one the best books from this series. I went on a binge-a-thon, I could not stop reading and it’s a pretty hefty book, coming in at over 500 pages.

If you love Rhage and Mary, you will be smitten with this story. It’s emotional with the challenge they face but it’s so very sweet and endearing. Rhage is such a melt my heart goofball but also sex on legs and can I just say, Mary is one lucky shellan! Most of the book is told from their POV’s with a little V, Layla,Assail and a new female who I have a feeling will play a part in the future books. But those moments with Rhage and Mary stole the show for me. I loved how these two would reminisce about the past and the connection Mary has with the beast.

I know most reader’s don’t really care about the review’s to this book. Their going to buy it regardless and I am the same way but I love being able to tell you that you’re going to love it! For those who have never given this series a try…what the hell are you waiting for?!
